Hampton officer arrested in child porn case A 27-year police veteran has been arrested on three child pornography charges, some allegedly involving images downloaded to police department computers. State police arrested Lt. Norman Varner, 50, at a state police facility Wednesday, Cpl. Jimmie Wideman, a Hampton police spokesman, said yesterday. Varner was charged with use of communications systems to facilitate certain offenses involving children and possession of sexually explicit items involving children with intent to distribute, both felonies; and possession of child pornography, a misdemeanor. Varner is accused of downloading sexually explicit material involving teen-age girls from the Internet onto a computer, Wideman said.
