As a followup to the CERT(sm) Advisory CA-99-14
"CERTŪ Advisory CA-99-14 Multiple Vulnerabilities in BIND",
SGI has investigated and provides the following information.

- -----------------------
- --- Issue Specifics ---
- -----------------------

The BIND distribution provides Internet domain name service known as DNS.

ISC and CERT have reported several vulnerabilities discovered in
certain versions of BIND distributions. These vulnerabilities can be
used to perform denial of service attacks and/or to obtain privileged
access remotely.

SGI has investigated the issue and provides the following information for
customer interpretation and possible action.

- --------------
- --- Impact ---
- --------------

SGI distributes BIND for all SGI operating systems: IRIX, UNICOS
and SGI Linux. Vulnerability exposure depends on which BIND distribution
version was installed. A table of vulnerabilities and BIND versions
can be found on: http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/bind-security-19991108.html

SGI distributes BIND 4.9.7 on IRIX as eoe.sw.named which is not loaded
by default on IRIX systems. The named(1M) man page incorrectly states "This
version is based on the BIND 4.9.4 patchlevel 1 release from Paul Vixie."
This version of BIND can lead to a denial of service.

SGI distributes BIND 8.2.1 on http://freeware.sgi.com/ for IRIX.
This version of BIND can lead to a denial of service and remote access.

SGI distributes BIND 4.9.3 on UNICOS on Cray systems.
This version of BIND can lead to a denial of service.

SGI distributes BIND 8.2 on SGI Linux 1.0/1.1 which is based on RedHat 6.0.
This version of BIND can lead to a denial of service and remote access.

These vulnerabilities were reported by Internet Software Consortium (ISC):
http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/bind-security-19991108.html

These vulnerabilities were also reported by CERT(sm) in Advisory CA-99-14:
http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-99-14-bind.html

These vulnerabilities have been publicly discussed in public Usenet
newsgroups and Internet mailing lists.

- --------------------------
- --- Temporary Solution ---
- --------------------------

Unfortunately, there are no immediate or temporary workarounds for
this issue. This issue can only be addressed with the installation
of a updated version of the BIND 8.2.2-P5 distribution.

- ----------------
- --- Solution ---
- ----------------

No SGI patches are currently available for the various SGI BIND distributions.

Unsupported by SGI, BIND 8.2.2-P5 fixes for these vulnerabilities can
be found on:
http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/bind-security-19991108.html

- -----------------------
- --- Acknowledgments ---
- -----------------------

SGI wishes to thank the Internet Software Consortium and the CERT
Coordination Center for their assistance in this matter.
